Statement of Changes in Equity
Opening equity, movements on each capital account during the period, and the closing balance. The balance sheet's companion for owners and auditors.
Questions It Answers
- How much capital was contributed or withdrawn this period?
- What was equity at the start of the year versus period end?
- Why doesn't the closing balance here match equity on the Balance Sheet?
Filters
| Filter | What it does |
|---|---|
| Date | Period range. The opening balance is computed up to the day before the start date. |
| Division | Pre-filled from the user role's default division. A role locked to one division cannot change it. |
How To Read It
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Opening balance | All equity accounts before the start date, plus current-year profit (loss) from 1 January of that year up to the day before the start date. |
| One row per equity account | Credit - debit movement of each capital account during the period. The division's retained-earnings account is not included. |
| Total Equity Increase / Decrease | Sum of the rows above. |
| Ending Equity Balance | Opening balance + total change. |
Why The Numbers May Differ
- Only approved journals count. Journals still awaiting approval (when journal approval is on) change no figure here.
- The period's own profit (loss) is not added to the closing balance - only capital-account movements are. So Ending Equity is lower than Balance Sheet equity at the end date by the period's profit; add the profit from the Income Statement to reconcile.
- The opening balance already carries current-year profit since 1 January; when the period starts on 1 January, that profit is zero.
