Animal Type
The animal type master decides which metrics apply to a house. Fill it in once at the start; after that it is rarely touched.
When This Form Is Used
- When setting the application up for the first time, before any house is created.
- When the business starts keeping a new kind of animal whose recording metrics differ.
Fields That Matter
| Field | What to watch |
|---|---|
| Name | The name operators recognise, for example Broiler, Layer, Dairy Cattle. |
| Category | Poultry or ruminant. Used for report grouping. |
| Track Eggs | Turn on for layers. Decides whether the egg fields appear on the daily record. |
| Track Weight | Turn on for animals that are weighed, such as broilers and ruminants. Drives the weight fields and the ADG report. |
| Track Milk | Turn on for dairy animals. Drives the milk field. |
| Unit | The unit the population is counted in, usually head. |
Those three tracking switches are not cosmetic: a metric that is off never appears on the daily record and never enters the reports.
After Saving
- Houses using this animal type immediately follow its metric switches.
- Changing a switch mid-cycle changes which fields are shown on the daily record, but never deletes data already saved.
Common Problems
- Egg or weight fields missing on the daily record: check the animal type of the house behind that batch, not the batch itself.
- An animal type cannot be deleted: a house still uses it. Change the animal type on that house first.
User Checklist
- The animal type name is one field operators recognise.
- The track eggs, weight, and milk switches match reality.
- Its unit is consistent with the livestock product later used by mortality posting.
